Black History Month – Nottingham Giveaway
“I remember when H smiled the first time I cooked jollof rice” shares K, one of our amazing foster parents, during a recent support group. “I don’t think it was just about the food, it felt familiar to him. He felt valued and seen”.
It is hearing comments like this that reinforce the message that representation is so important within the UK care system. It hugely boosts the self-worth of young people if they live with a foster family where their culture is recognised and celebrated. Black History Month is a great time to highlight this because we are so passionate about recruiting more diverse foster parents within Nottingham and the East Midlands.

At Hope, we understand that deciding to foster is a significant step. That’s why we’d love to invite you to our upcoming Open Days, held at our brand-new offices in Bestwood Village, Nottingham.
These are informal, pop-in sessions where you can meet our friendly team, chat with current foster parents, and ask all the questions you might have about fostering. There’s no pressure and no presentations, but definitely some cake on offer!
Skills to Foster
A few weekends ago, we had the pleasure of running our Skills to Foster training. These sessions are designed to provide people at the start of their fostering journey with the knowledge, confidence, and insight they need to take their first steps into fostering. Over three days, applicants learn about the role of a foster parent, the needs of children who come into care, the challenges and rewards fostering can bring, and the support they’ll receive along the way.

Understanding Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) and their impact on fostered young people
Adverse Childhood Experiences (ACEs) refer to traumatic events that occur during childhood. These experiences can include various forms of abuse, neglect, and household dysfunction. Examples of ACEs include physical, emotional, or sexual abuse, physical or emotional neglect, witnessing domestic violence, parental separation, substance misuse within the household, and having a family member with mental illness or imprisoned.
The importance of training for foster parents
Fostering is a rewarding yet challenging vocation. To ensure our foster parents are well-equipped to provide the best care possible, we prioritise a comprehensive training programme. This week, we invited FosterTalk to deliver face-to-face training at our new offices in Bestwood Village.
