Once you have applied to be a foster parent, you enter ‘Stage One’ of your assessment. This is where you meet your Form F assessor who will guide you through the entire process. Alongside this, we invite all our applicants to attend the Skills to Foster preparation training course.

Skills to Foster is a 3 day in-person training course which is delivered by our experienced Supervising Social Workers. Our training course is based on resources provided by The Fostering Network along with our own experience and knowledge of the challenges of fostering. The aim of this pre-approval course is equip potential foster families with the knowledge and skills needed to best support and care for vulnerable young people. Areas we cover include; fostering legislation, child development, equality, diversity, inclusion, therapeutic approaches, trauma, types of fostering and much more.

We are particularly proud to include some of our current foster parents and young people within our training days. They will discuss their experiences and share an unfiltered view of fostering young people in the East Midlands.

We really valued the Skills to Foster course. A highlight for us was meeting S, who talked to us about arriving in the UK without his parents, and how his foster family made him feel welcome and safe.
